so yeah, been looking around at mods for guitars and i keep comming across people who scallop their frets. ive known about this forever and know its nothing new but what is its purpose? ive seen people on both sides of any aspect and just need some fairly unbiased opinions.

I think it has to do with preferences. Also, not sure though, I think the 20+ frets are easier to play when scalloped.
Not sure though, never played one before.

Also, there's a scalloped Venom I believe, saw it on Facebook.

It has to do with bending the notes easier, and being able to play with a lighter touch. Yngwie was the big proponent of scalloped fretboards; a lot of times you'll just see players do it from the 12th fret on. It's got a weird vibe to it.

Yeah, Yngwie's thé scalloped fret man. And yeah, bending was also one of the things I've read about scalloped frets. And that it is an entirely different way of playing, especially for beginners, since you "lose" the touch of the fret.

And if I'm correct, I read that it is somewhat harder to shred with scalloped frets, not sure about this though. It was an article on Yngwie, about how his frets would give him the advantage of being faster, while others said it was the other way around.

yeah ive seen both sides to that one as well, im wanting to find someone local who will do it and get it done to one of my cheaper guitars as a sort of test, cause i have yet to find a cheap guitar that has a quality scalloping job done cause im wanting to see how it feels nd go from there

Its said to be either slower or faster because it takes much more precision, if you push down on it too hard you will play out of tune, as the string should no longer have any contact with the fretboard. Malmsteen already has that precision but for beginners and mid ranged guitarists its much harder to be consistent without lots of practice. So yeah it would be faster if you practiced enough because you don't have to press as hard but to start off with its slower as you have to muck around trying to get the note right tongue.gif

Ritchie Blackmore from deep purple was also a big scalloped guy. I think its interesting but really not practical for most guitarists. Keeping chords in tune must be a bitch.

Well, I think it would be great for vocalists that play solo's and stuff. And during their singing, they just leave the guitar.
Oh well, it would be great to try that out some day, playing a fully scalloped guitar.

@Jobless, I wouldn't go as far to say that, but just be prepared to invest a lot of time perfecting your technique if you did go down that road. You'd be a lot better guitarist at the end, but would be a fairly difficult route to take.

That, basically.
I have no idea why you'd want to do it, though confused.gif

yeah, i dont see why you'd want to do it either. seems like it would be too much of a hassle. id rather just jam. might be good for slide guitar though.

well it comes down to i just want to experience it and see if its something i would enjoy investing the tie and effort into, ive been told by my guitar teacher that i have a light touch and could probably do scalloped frets somewhat easily. i was just wondering if anyone had any personal experiences

If you have a light touch you would probably be fine with it. I also dont typically push the strings allthe way to the fretboard but when I tried one it did kind of mess up my bending technique. just felt wierd is all. not for me.

My six string hamer axe is scalloped and yes, it does help you develop a lighter and sensitive touch to your playing. That in turn does help you play a little faster if you tend to play hard with your fretting hand.Bending is easier and the feeling is strange at first but you get used to it. It has help me become a better tech player. I must say that having my seven string scalloped is really nice and it really looks nice too! thumbsup.gif thumbsup.gif
