The Perfect DBZ...
Yeah, I'm a bass player, but I'm also a major gear-head, and I do have some limited experience with guitar. I do have a good sense of ergonomics and balance, and I am writing this spec assuming the role of a rhythm guitarist, because, let's face it-- I'm probably not going to develop the chops for lead guitar in this lifetime!
Body style: "Star" Modified Bird of Prey. Specifically, the upper portion will be more drawn-out on the bass side near the neck, like the Gibson Explorer and Jackson Kelly. Also, the V portion would be offset, with the "leg" on the treble side being shorter than the "leg" on the bass side. The inspiration comes from a now-defunct Jackson body shape that I thought was their coolest-looking axe. You can see the outline
HERE, basically combining their Kelly and Rhoads shapes.
Body woods: Mahogany body with Quilted Maple top
Neck: 25.5" scale quartersawn maple, ebony fretboard. Elliptical back shape roughly-equivalent to the new Gibson Les Paul '08 or the Fender SRV signature. Having played some Tobias basses with asymmetrical profiles, I have to say, they really are quite comfortable.
Fretboard: Compensated nut, Conical radius (10" at first fret, 15" at 24th fret-- I'm more concerned about chording, after all), 24 med-jumbo nickle-silver frets. Mother of Pearl Cemetary Cross inlays.
Headstock: I know the big, flaring 3+3 is Dean Z's signature, but I'd like to go with an inline-6, tilted back at a 12 degree angle. The sharper and more blade-like, the better!
Electronics: EMG 60A (neck), and EMG 81 (bridge). 3-way toggle with volume and active tone control.
Hardware: Tune-a-matic bridge with string-thru-body (off-set V-shaped) ferrules, Sperzel locking tuners.
Finishes: Bright translucent green (similar to Radiation) with lightly-bursted black edges, satin top coat. Clear satin finish on back of neck. Matte black hardware.
